It's Time for Your Quarterly Duvet Wash!
Did you know that a six-month unwashed duvet can contain up to 20,000 live dust mites, dead skin cells and fungus? 😱 It's not enough to wash just the duvet cover regularly—it's also important to wash duvet inserts, comforters and pillows at least once every three months. The easiest way to remember is by washing with the changing of the seasons.
Here are some ways you can maximize your quarterly duvet cleaning:
1️⃣ Clean what comes out *and* goes into storage
If you're switching to a warmer duvet in anticipation of colder months ahead, wash and dry whatever comes out of storage before putting it on your bed. The same goes for your lighter duvet. It should be clean and thoroughly dry before it goes into storage for the winter.
2️⃣ Use an XL washing machine
Consider visiting a laundromat to wash bulky bedding, especially if you have more than one duvet or comforter to wash. Commercial washers are larger and provide bulky items with ample room to get clean. These washers often have specialty settings that are better for preserving down filling too.
3️⃣ Add oxygen booster to the wash
Add oxygen booster to the wash with your detergent to keep white duvets bright and prevent them from yellowing overtime (if you're using our Supersalt all you need is a Tbsp per wash).
4️⃣ Use distilled white vinegar in the rinse cycle
Adding 1/2 a cup of distilled white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment works wonders for duvets that have seen a lot of sweat. Your washing machine will release this during the rinse cycle and there will be no lingering vinegar scent by the time the wash cycle is complete.
5️⃣ Dry with wool dryer balls
Throw a few wool laundry balls in the dryer to reduce dry time and help fluff duvets back up. Optional: add a few drops of essential oil to each ball for a hint of scent!
